Have you jumped on the air fryer bandwagon? If so, you are going to love this recipe! If not, it is time to buy an air fryer!
Cooking sweet potatoes in the air fryer cuts the cooking time in half compared to the oven, making this an easy weeknight side dish. Not to mention the air fryer adds a crispiness you cannot get from the oven. PLUS the air fryer gives the texture and flavor of vegetables fried in oil without the calories! Win win!
My family never ate sweet potatoes when I was growing up. I thought sweet potatoes were a Thanksgiving side dish covered in marshmallows and brown sugar. I didn’t even know you could roast sweet potatoes until I was an adult. Now it feels like sweet potatoes are having a resurgence. Sweet potato fries are a side option on every menu. Sweet potato crackers. Sweet potato pizza crust. Dog food is made from sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes are everywhere!
The first time I tried sweet potato fries I was hooked! I am a sucker for that salty sweet combination. I am also a ketchup lover and like anything that is a vehicle for getting ketchup in my mouth. Just kidding…these potatoes don’t even need ketchup! They are perfect on their own. Plus, I live in Chicago where ketchup is frowned upon.
PREPPING THE POTATOES
- Wash & dry the potatoes.
- Trim the ends and any knotty pieces.
- Peel potatoes (optional- I know some people prefer to keep the skin on)
CUTTING THE WEDGES
I made these potatoes twice for good measure. The first time I used one very large sweet potato. The second time I used two smaller sweet potatoes (I recommend using smaller potatoes).
Cutting the large sweet potato: I found the large sweet potato needed to be cut into more wedges than the smaller potatoes. Start by cutting the potato in half lengthwise. Each half will be cut into a total of 8 wedges. Continue cutting in half until you have a total of 16 wedges.
Cutting the smaller sweet potatoes (pictured above): I recommend using smaller sweet potatoes for this recipe as I find them to be more manageable to cut. Start by cutting the in half lengthwise. You will cut each half into a total of 4 wedges. Continue cutting in half until you have 8 wedges (or 16 wedges if using 2 potatoes).
USING THE AIR FRYER
I have a Power Vortex XL 5 qt Air Fryer. QVC got me! Take all my money, Laurie Greiner! The type of air fryer is important to note because all air fryers function differently and the cook temperature and time may need to be adjusted for your fryer. I think my air fryer is hotter than some others so I typically tone down the temperature. I have seen similar recipes which call for a temperature of 400 for 20 minutes, however when I tried that method the potatoes burned on the outside but remained under cooked on the inside. Cooking at 375 is a controlled temperature that allows the inside to cook until tender while the outside slowly becomes crispy.
Start by placing the wedges in an even layer in the air fryer. Make sure the taters are not overlapping because they will not get crispy if overlapping. You may need to cook them in 2 batches to avoid overlap. Pop them in the fryer at 375 for 8 minutes, then remove basket and flip to other side to sure all sides get maximum crispness. If taters are looking dry you can spray them with cooking spray. I use Trader Joe’s coconut oil spray. Pop them back in the fryer for another 5 minutes. It is important to note that air fryers cook foods very quickly. You will want to keep an eye on your taters, especially during the 2nd half, to ensure they do not burn.
Remove once done and serve immediately. Enjoy!
Air Fryer Sweet Potato Wedges
Equipment
- Air Fryer
Ingredients
- 1 sweet potato (1 large or 2 small)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
- 1 spritz of cooking spray (optional- I used Trader Joe's Coconut Oil Spray)
Instructions
Prep Potatoes
- Wash & dry potatoes.
- Cut off ends and any knotty parts or roots.
- Peel potatoes (this is optional, I know some like to keep the skin on for extra texture & flavor)
- Cut the sweet potato into even wedges (see notes for cutting instructions)
- Put wedges in mixing bowl and toss with 1 tablespoon olive oil and 1 teaspoon of sea salt. Make sure all sides are coated with oil to ensure the do not stick to fryer. Add more oil as needed. The potato actually gets more crispy when it is covered in oil.
Cook Potatoes
- Place potatoes in an even layer in air fryer. Make sure potatoes don't overlap. If potatoes are overlapping they will not get crispy.
- Cook on 375 for 13 minutes, then flip. You can spray with cooking spray if they look dry. Pop back into the air fryer for 5 minutes.
- Serve immediately. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
